Naples Federico II, Italy: The University Federico II is the oldest state University in Europe. It was founded by Frederick Hoenstaufen in 1224 in order to create a fervent centre of civic thought capable of elaborating and developing the principles of state and social organization which he had devised. The pleasant scenery of its location, the value of the professors employed, the high standard of scientific research carried out along with the attention focused on the specific needs of students, are all factors that contribute even today, in making this University one of the most prestigious of Italy. Today, as in the past, faithful to the spirit of Frederick II's foundation, it is a melting pot for eminent scientists, learned men of letters and talented statesmen who hold prestigious positions in Italy and throughout the world. It has international relations with over 200 European universities.
